The are four different series of gun safes manufactured by American Security Company. The most economical is the TF Series American Security gun safe. It has a 3/16″ steel plated door. The fire rating for this safe is 30 minutes. There are three 1″ bolts on the door. For a budget safe, these features are decent, but American Security made some more premium options as well.
The SF series is the next series up. It is a little more expensive, but you will be looking at a much higher quality safe. This safe comes with a 60 minute fire rating. Unlike the TF which only comes in black, the SF comes in several different colors of exterior gloss. The chrome locking bolts on the door are 1 1/4″ and there are three such bolts. The steel plate door is 1/4″ thick. It has a Palusol door seal. The ball bearing hinges on the door are adjustable.
The BF and HF series ranges from about $2,000 to around $12,000. Their specifications, fire ratings and security measures vary greatly from safe to safe, as you can imagine with such a price range. These are worth taking a look at if you are looking for a high end safe. The best bang for your buck AMSEC safes are definitely the TF. These are the ones that sell the most and customers seem very satisfied with their performance.
It’s almost a shame not to store your pistol and ammunition in a nice firearms box. Don’t do it. Ammunition and firearms should be stored separately. Lock box manufacturers advise against stocking ammunition inside their products. No fireman will go near one making loud noises if they can help it.

The best container for your ammunition is the box it came in. You should keep it in a cool, dry place away from dangerous chemicals. However, ISO for rifle safes aren’t comparable to, say, UL ratings. Class B only tells you a cabinet has steel walls 1/4″ thick, but doesn’t actually say it’s proven to stand-up better to break-ins. That may be true in theory, but ISO doesn’t test safes. Unlike UL, who give ratings based on real-world testing.
These also say nothing about the quality of the steel, the construction, or special features. Smarter buyers are better-off looking for specific information, instead of looking at letters and leaving it at that.
Strictly, not to mention legally speaking V-Line Security Cases aren’t rifle cabinets. Most models are California-approved firearms safety devices, defined as devices “other than a gun safe” that prevent children and unauthorized users from firing a firearm (California Penal Code Section 12087.6).

Blowing-up someone’s gun cabinet isn’t a healthy idea, but what if you got paid? Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. (UL) testers use every tool known to larceny and then some to tell you how much punishment your security can take before it hurts.
UL burglary-protection ratings come in letters telling you the breaching method a pistol box’s tested to resist, with a number for the minimum number of minutes the method should take to reach the contents. UL ratings are useful for insurance companies: UL-rated safes can justify a higher coverage on insured contents next to non-rated ones.
Ratings with an “x6” mean a safe tested to prevent breaching on all six sides. Otherwise only the door, combination lock, and hinges are tried.

“TL” is for rifle cabinet that stop common tools, including hammer-and-chisel, power drills, and crowbars. Containers other than safes may be rated TL-5 a.k.a. Residential Security Container (RSC), the lowest UL rating.
“TR” goes to rifle cabinets that frustrate cutting torches. TR-ready boxes are dual-rated (TLTR) and stand-up to both tools and torches for as many minutes as the number shown.
The TX rating applies to lock boxes capable of surviving intact explosive breaching, involving up to 8 ounces of nitroglycerin. Job inquiries are best sent to UL.
The best spot for your rifle cabinet is in a corner with the fewest sides exposed. You’ll find the base of most models come with mounting holes in the corners, but fireproof safes have a single hole in the center, preserving the fire-retarding material around it. Get the length of an anchor up to the washer, minus the its thickness around a mounting hole, to find the depth of the holes you’ll drill. You can drill through a mounting hole into the concrete, or mark each hole and move it clear. Vacuum thoroughly after drilling to stop dust getting between fasteners and the concrete.
With the washer and nut on to protect the threads, hammer an anchor into place before inserting the pin, then drive it flush with the anchor’s head. Tighten the nut with your fingers then a wrench. Finish every mounting point, and store your tools in another room. Yours is ready for duty.
