LockSAF got its start selling gun safes early 2008. The founder, Wall Street exec Richard Nguyen, had an epiphany about tragedies linked to firearms landing in unsuitable hands. After searching for reliable Asian manufacturing, Nguyen rolled out his first and so far only product, the PBS-001 Personal Biometric Safe.
I like how his website shows you the photocopied test results for firearms safety device certification in California, disclosure missing from most gun safe manufacturers. Talk about something to hide: unlike competitors, who place the biometrics in a separate (and vulnerable) housing screwed onto the case door, LockSAF buries the optical scanner and its electronics inside the PBS-001′s case itself. Which is 9-gauge steel throughout, the heaviest I’ve seen in this product class. Ten times out of ten the electronics fail first, so the (literally) built-in protection inspires confidence. It also makes the top-loading PBS-001 flat on all sides and easy to stow, even though it holds two handguns and their magazines. Simple but elegant, like the black finish. $300+ on Amazon isn’t cheap, but you’re buying class-leading specs and better-than cookie- cutter thinking. You’ll still need a true gun safe especially for fire protection, but let’s hope LockSAF has ideas. Its exterior measures 13.98 in (W) X 10.24 in (D) X 4.57 in (H). The foam-padded interior is spacious and can allow storage of items up to 12 inches long. It weighs 22 pounds. |
The LockSAF is ideal for safekeeping of valuables. Easy to program and use, it gives its owner fast access to its contents. All it takes is for the person, whose fingerprint has been stored or programmed in the safe, to press the activation button once and then place his finger (the fingerprint of which has been previously stored) on the reader and the safe will open.
It can store up to 10 fingerprints. The fingerprint recognition window is located at the front panel of the safe. The unit functions on one standard 9V battery that is located within the said panel under an easy-access cover. Every LockSAF safe comes with a back-up key that is to be used to open the safe by a person other than by those authorized by the biometric system. The safe can be programmed to store up to 10 fingerprints into the memory. All LockSAF safes have a one-year warranty against product defects.
Made of 9-gauge heavy-duty steel, the LockSAF safe is a strong tamper-proof box. It is easy to mount inside a drawer, a wall, or to any flat surface, with its four pre-drilled holes in the bottom panel. This mounting feature keeps the safe away from danger’s way and from malevolent intentions.
