For anyone shopping around for a handgun holster, there are a number of things you must consider before you make your final decision. Not all are created equal…In fact, there are several models that may appear similar, but are tactically designed for different functional usage. Then there are some leather gun holsters that have specific features you may not be able to find on a nylon model, one example is the leather swivel holsters. Some may fit into small gun safes, where others will need to be stored separately.
Something else that comes to mind when considering any type is the type of safety features incorporated in the particular model you choose. If you are in law enforcement and are looking for an off duty holster, you may only be looking for a level 1, which means there is only one safety measure that keeps the weapon inside it. A level two means there are two safety measures, like a snap over the weapon and a clip on the inside holding the trigger guard, which requires the wearer to rock the weapon forward to release the it.

What about shoulder gun holsters? These are tactically appropriate only in certain situations, if the user is not wearing an outer garment (like a jacket) on top of it. Otherwise, you limit your response time and ability to draw the weapon when in a confrontation. Purchasing a tactical gun holster requires serious forethought. You need to understand that having one or two weapons does not give you the advantage in a situation, if one or both of those weapons are not easily accessible when you need them. It only takes an aggressor a few seconds to clear the distance between the two of you, and in that small window of time you needed to have drawn your weapon and have, it pointed at the target, to effectively stop or minimize the threat.
If you are reaching under your jacket, or kneeling down for your ankle holster, you have now put yourself in a position where the assailant may be out of your line of sight, thus preventing or delaying your ability to get off a clear shot. A nylon holster does not grip your weapon like leather one would, so you are draw time is quicker coming out of nylon, but you need the straps to be secure, since they slide out so quickly.
Whuchever you are looking at, be sure it is made for your model handgun. Most gun holsters fit a variety of models anyway, but also think about where you will be carrying it, and how quickly you can access it. As you can see, buying one is a serious decision that goes beyond choosing what looks cool.
